Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo is one of those products I just keep coming back to, no matter how many others I try. And trust me I have tried many. Because they do finish up so quickly . Honestly what’s with that, I don’t even spray that much. Anyhow!
Dry shampoos soak up excess oil and greasiness, and some are even designed to add volume, making your hair look fresh without actually washing it. If your hair tends to get greasy by the second or third day and you want to avoid over-washing, then trust me, you need a dry shampoo in your cabinet because, let’s be real, washing your hair too often with actual shampoo can strip away natural oils and leave you with dry and damaged hair, and nobody wants that.
Apparently, there are three different types of Amika Perk Up Shampoo.
- Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo, which is their OG. It’s ideal for normal to dry hair types that need shampooing 3-4 times a week. This one contains rice starch and sea buckthorn, and Amika claims that it brings flat hair back to life.
- Amika Perk Up Plus Extended Dry Shampoo, which is ideal for all hair types and for those who only want to wash their hair 1-2 times a week. This one is infused with gentle AHA mandelic acid, rambutan seed extract, and peptides. (Wow, peptides!)
- Amika Perk Up Ultra, which, as the name suggests is an extra-strength dry shampoo for those with extra oily scalps and those who want maximum oil absorption.
So, take your pick. Since their OG works best for my needs at the moment as I have been on a mission to recover my damaged hair, I always end up grabbing that one. For my current hair condition I’m not about to let mandelic acid and all that jazz mess with my oily scalp. Sure, my scalp gets oily, but not that much.
My Review of Amika perk-up dry shampoo
I’ve been using Amika Perk Up on and off for a while now, and I’ve tried a bunch of other dry shampoos but honestly, this one is my second favorite, right after Living Proof and Batiste. I cannot decide between living proof and Batiste.
I used to be one of those people who thought dry shampoo was a scam, because seriously, why would I spray powder into my hair instead of just washing it? It sounded like one of those overpriced beauty gimmicks that beauty brands push to make you buy yet another unnecessary product, and I was convinced it was just a fancy way to make your hair smell nice without actually cleaning it, but then I tried it on one of those greasy hair, no-time-to-wash days, and let’s just say, I had a humbling experience because not only did it soak up all the oil, but it also gave my hair so much volume that I suddenly understood why people were into dry shampoos.
That was back when my hair was shoulder-length, and washing and styling didn’t feel like a full-on mission. But then, I grew it out, and that’s when I realized that it must be really hard for people with long hair to keep up with all the styling and maintenance, you know what I’m saying? It’s like, suddenly, your hair becomes a whole project.
And that, my friends, is how I accidentally became a dry shampoo evangelist. 10/10, would get lazy and use again. But not too much, ofcourse, cuz you will end up collecting starch in your scalp and the whole thing becomes a mess.
How to use Amika Perk up?
Using dry shampoo is very simple. You shake the bottle, section your hair, hold it 6–7 inches away from your face, make sure you cover your eyes, and then spray. Of course, don’t go crazy here. Just a little mist over the roots. This helps target the oil buildup at the roots.
Let the product sit there for a while and use your fingers to massage the product into your scalp. This helps the dry shampoo absorb excess oil and blend in.
Now, the thing with dry shampoo is that certain shampoos are not meant for darker hair because they leave a white powdery residue. While Amika Perk Up blends in seamlessly, but if your hair is on the very dark side, like midnight sky dark, this dry shampoo might not be your bestie. There are other dry shampoos that suit darker hair better. And I used the word VERY here.
It’s talc-free and uses rice starch to absorb all that nasty excess oil. Talc-free is honestly something you should always look for if you’re planning to stock up on dry shampoo because talc can be a bit of a troublemaker. It can irritate your scalp and even come with health risks. So yeah, definitely some important info to know before you go splurging on a dry shampoo. Your scalp will thank you later.
Amika Perk up dry shampoo got an amazing fragrance, but the fragrance seems to be going away. Either it’s my nose getting numb to it or it fades in real life, but it’s a win-win for those who have a problem with fragrance. Not for me though, I love its fragrance.
Final thoughts
Amika Perk up definitely absorbs excess oil and does bring your flat hair back to life. Also it adds a bit of volume too. It’s not going to wow you and leave you amazed in terms of volume, but your hair will look full of life.
Imagine you’re busy and you have got no time, also you don’t want your hair to be looking like a greaseball either and you want a little refresh? Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo is the answer. It works for all hair types, and they’ve got three variations mentioned earlier, so choose your pick. And no, it doesn’t weigh your hair down. I’ve used a few that do that. So, less time in the bathroom, more time looking fab.
